项目摘要

本研究の目的は、自由化政策が広く世を覆った植民地期インドで現在同様2次産業が停滞していたことに注目し、その原因の一端を、20世紀前半インド最大の近代的製造会社タタ鉄鋼所の労働者の社会的属性と労務管理制度改革・生産性との関係を明らかにすることで、考察することである。その際本研究は、1920・30年代同鉄鋼所に従事した労働者のサービス・レコード(職員簿)が提供する、各々の労働者の年齢、出身地、宗教・カースト、識字能力、職種、給与、昇給などの情報を基礎に、労働者の社会的属性が、労務管理制度改革・生産性といかなる関係があるのか、分析することを研究の主眼としている。コロナ禍の影響で、研究初年度である2020年度から長く、研究計画の修正を余儀なくされてきた。最大の修正点はサービス・レコードの追加収集作業であった。研究開始段階ですでに一定程度のサービス・レコードを有していたが、当該研究期間、追加収集し、そのうえで、分析を行うことが、本研究の大きな柱の一つであったからである。2023年3月に、ようやくインドに渡航することができ、当該作業を開始することができた。もっとも、今回の訪問で、現在、当該サービス・レコードを保管するタタ鉄鋼公文書館が、サービス・レコードの公開を行っていないことを確認した。他方で、今回の訪問で、サービス・レコードに代替しうる、タタ技術学校入学者数百人分の個票（1930年代以降）を入手することができた。当該個票にも、年齢、宗教・カーストなどの社会的属性が記載されており、現在、当該研究課題に即したその利用方法を検討している。なお、2022年度は、8月、イギリス・ロンドンに滞在し、植民地期インドの2次産業の発展に影響を与えた政府資料、個別企業情報の史料収集を進めることもできた。総じて、2022年度は、2度の海外調査を通じ、コロナ禍で滞っていた作業を行うことができた。
