2022年度はShakespeareの作品を対象とし、研究代表者と分担者で〈時〉のメタファーをテーマとする共同研究を行った。代表者はShakespeareと同時代の詞華集に見られるtimeの形容辞に着目、この詩人が伝統的措辞とレトリックを使用しながらも独創性を発揮していることを、Sonnets、長詩Venus and Adonis, 戯曲Twelfth Nightにおける擬人化された〈時〉の複数イメージと〈時〉への呼びかけについて考察した。続いて戯曲Hamletにおける動物名のメタファーを再考し、Hamlet研究書や校訂本において言及のない動物名について指摘、本作品中の動物名の繰り返しが意図的であること、「雲の場」におけるweasel, camel, whaleのメタファー義の新解釈を提示した。10種の日本語訳作品を比較することにより、日本語への翻訳によって失われるメタファー義の問題も指摘した。分担者も「時のメタファー」をテーマとし、As You Like It とSonnetsに描かれた〈時〉と人との関わりを表す比喩表現を観察、従来の認知メタファー論の見解では捉えきれなかったShakespeare独特の時間認識およびその認識を構成するメタファーの構造について考察した。詩人が〈時の翁〉という文化モデルをどのように扱っているか、これに注目し、Sonnetsに表された〈時〉のメタファーが、人間にとって理不尽で無慈悲で手に負えない存在としての〈時〉の性質とともに〈時〉の不可逆性をも反映するものであることを論じた。またSonnets全154編中、特に美青年への愛を描いた1～126番までの詩群を対象にした論文では、〈時〉との関わりの中での詩人の青年に対する認識のしかたと愛情について、人間を〈植物〉として理解するメタファーの観点から考察し、詩に明示されない隠されたレトリックを考察した。
