本年度の主要な実績は、単著の刊行である。『両岸の旅人──イスマイル・ユルバンと地中海の近代』（東京大学出版会）においては、本研究課題との関わりにおいて以下の点をあきらかにした。１．近世から近代にかけての環大西洋史と地中海史とのつながりを、近世以来の植民地貿易の過程で各地に居住した人々の歴史とともに描き、海洋に隣接した諸地域において、地理的な想像力がどのように類似していたか、連関していたかを考察した。２．19世紀地中海の両岸の社会において、対岸の文化、社会、風俗、地理等についてどのような認識が存在していたかを比較考察した。とくに、北岸の人々が南岸の社会を単に異なったものとみるだけでなく、むしろ共通性のある存在としてとらえていたことを実例とともに考察した。３．地中海という枠組みが、文化的な全体性として、また地政学的な枠組みとして、19世紀ヨーロッパにおいて論じられた枠組みについても考察した。以上は、イスマイル・ユルバンという個人だけでなく同時代人の思想、言説を渉猟した結果として得られた成果である。また本年度から、地中海という景観発見のもうひとつの例として、地中海における水産業と水産加工業についての研究を開始した。西地中海の両岸において海から採取される資源（魚、海綿、珊瑚など）と、その流通、文化的価値付けなどの問題について考察することで、西地中海と東地中海の比較という地域史の新しい視野をひらき、またあわせて、グローバルヒストリーへと開かれた地中海史研究の可能性を開拓することを目指している。
