In the frame of the Special Research Programme of the DFG “The apoplast of higher plants: compartment of storage, transport, and reactions” research in this innovative and scientifically neglected area was funded over a period of 6 years. In the meantime, most of the achievements have been published in internationally highly ranked scientific journals. However, these publications only partly reflect the truly inter- and transdisciplinary character of the research approach in the frame of this SPP which has substantially contributed to the achieved progress in the understanding of the role of the apoplast. The objective of this proposal is the comprehensive publication of the main research achievements of the SPP in a monograph. It is expected that this book will clearly reflect and document the contribution of German scientists and of the DFG to enhancing our knowledge in this scientific area.
