サトイモの生産と貯蔵に関するフィールドワークを国内(広島県及び岩手県)、ニュージーランド(ワングヌイ及びワイアラパ地方)、韓国にて行った。ニュージーランドにおけるサトイモの生産は、日本に比べ涼しく短い夏に限られていることは明確である。韓国における気候条件は日本に類似している。安東地方の北緯36度30分の地域では日本の同緯度の地域と同じようにサトイモの生産が盛んであり、ニュージーランドの同緯度の地方(北オークランド)よりも活発である。日本と韓国では貯蔵の需要はほぼ同じであるが、ニュージーランドにおいてサトイモが今なお栽培されている地方では冬は一般的により温暖である。ニュージーランドではサトイモの食物としての現在の地位は一般的に大変低い。生産方法はしばしば不用意で冬季の貯蔵、植栽の選抜、栽培条件等をより効果的にするためにほとんど努力が払われていない。史料によるとジャガイモが渡来する以前、サトイモは食物源として高い評価を受けていた。東アジアでサトイモが現在も高い評価を受けているので、この地域からの民族学誌的観察はニュージーランドにおける可能なサトイモの考古学的記録を考察するのに有効である。遠い過去においてサトイモがより重要であったならば、穴蔵貯蔵はニュージーランドで歴史的に記録されているよりも、一般的であった可能性がある。

The production and storage of goods are related to domestic (Guangzhou and Iwate), domestic (Guangzhou and Iwate), and Korean (Korea). In Japan, production is limited to summer.
