项目摘要

ニューヨークの表象を分析する本研究は、その表象を文学、映画、写真、地図といった複数のメディアに見出し、観察した。2022年度は映画『キング・コング』（1933）を分析対象の一つとして取り上げ、「フィクション」としてカテゴライズされる作品内の出来事が、現実において観客がニューヨークに対していだくイメージに影響を及ぼしている点に着目し論文執筆を進めている。『キング・コング』において、コングがエンパイア・ステート・ビルディングをよじ登り、最後には落下する一連の場面は良く知られているが、ニューヨークにおいて当時最も高いビルに登ることで、コングはスカイスクレイパーに象徴されるニューヨークのイメージを目撃し、観客に伝えている。以上のようにフィクショナルな語りによって描写されるイメージと現実における対象との関係を詳細に検討するために、完全にフィクショナルなキャラクターと考えられるコングの「存在」についても分析の対象にした。コングが一つの作品の枠を超えて登場すること、そもそも「コング」と呼称されるモンスターは全て同一の個体なのか、それとも「コング」とはひとつの種を指す名称なのか、という問いに言及している。なお、この点については1933年から2023年までに公開された『キング・コング』の関連作品を分析の対象に含んでいる。作品内キャラクターの「存在」に関わる分析は、上記のように名前が指し示す対象という哲学的な分析に加え、コングが作品の内と外という仕切りを跨いでいるような演出が施されている点を読み解く、文学的な解釈に立脚している。
