Based on our long-time experiences in the field of preparative photochemistry, especially with the Photo-Dehydro-Diels-Alder reaction, new and efficient total syntheses for selected arylnaphthalen lignans should be developed. Naphthalenophanes are the key intermediates of these synthetic routes. Arylnaphthalen lignans are a structurally diverse class of natural products with great potential, e.g. in cancer therapy. Because the natural sources usually provide only small amounts, there is a great demand in efficient syntheses of these compounds.
