本研究では、聴覚障害児とその家族のために学校でも家庭でも使用できる日本手話・日本語学習絵本を開発し、聴覚障害児が進んで本を読み、日本語を学ぶことのできる教材を作成、提供することを目的とした。日本語をL2として学ぶろう児にとって、L1の日本手話とともに日本語の読み書きを習得することは社会に主体的に参加するためには必要なことである。しかし話し言葉を経ることなく, 音声言語の読み書きを文字だけで習得することは容易なことではない。そこで、ろう児が日本語の読みをとおして知識を増やしていけるように, 自分で読めるレベル別の多読読み物の開発を行った。多読授業は英語教育や日本語教育でも広く実践されており、第二言語習得の読解に効果的だと言われている。しかし現在ある市販の多読読み物は成人の日本語学習者向けのものが多く、年少者向けのものは少ない。そのため年少者向けでなおかつろう児が読みやすい多読読み物を開発し, それらを使用して多読授業を実践する実践研究を行った。作成した絵本「日本語学習読本」は、日本の昔話、童話をはじめ、伝記、物語や教科書のリライト、オリジナルの自然科学の話など多岐にわたり、計50冊分となった。市販の多読読み物に合わせて作成した日本語学習読本を活用し、多読授業を行った。その結果、これまで日本語学習にはどちらかというと受け身だった子どもたちが自分で本を選び、読書を楽しむようになるなどの変化がみられるようになった。多読授業は単に日本語を読ませるというだけでなく能動的, 積極的な授業態度につながった。読んだ本の内容について友だちと話し合ったり, ビデオに向かって手話に翻訳して読んだりするなどクラスの仲間との協同学習の機会にもなった。また作成した読み物の一部をHPに掲載したことで、学校の授業だけでなく、家庭でも気軽に本を読め、家族と一緒に読んだ本の感想を話し合う機会を作ることができた。
