项目摘要

従来女性蔑視と論じられてきた無住道暁の女性観をその著作である『沙石集』・『聖財集』・『雑談集』から考察した。『沙石集』には無住自身の意志による二度の改訂、後人の改訂が入り混じった多数の伝本が残されており、諸本間において、女性関連説話も収録姿勢に差違が見られる。『沙石集』の中では主に巻四と巻八に女性関連説話が集中しており、僧を誘惑する魔障の変化としての女性や愛執の念にかられる女性達が描かれている。しかし晩年の『雑談集』になると、描かれる女性の姿に変化が見られる。男性を仏道、ひいては往生に導く菩薩の化身としての女性や、真の道心を起こして仏道に帰依した故に女性の身のままで往生を遂げた女性の姿が描かれるのである。この変化は無住の女性観の変化によるものと、『沙石集』、『雑談集』それぞれの執筆目的の差違によるものという二種の理由に起因すると考えられ、無住自身に、晩年、当時としては珍しく女性に授戒したという事績がある(愛知県猿投神社蔵『三摩耶戒作法』)ことを併せて考えると、無住の思想的な問題として重大な意義を含んでいると考えられる。結果として、従来言われてきた女性蔑視という傾向は無住には希薄であったことが確認された。また従来無住作か否かが問われている『妻鏡』には、南山律師道宣の『浄心戒観法』を引用しつつ、女性に関する記述が認められることから、『沙石集』・『聖財集』・『雑談集』における『浄心誠観法』の引用状況と比較したところ、同様のことを説示する場合でもその語り口が無住の他の著作に比較して異質であることが判明した。女人説話に着眼して『妻鏡』の作者を比定するという切り口で、無住作であるとする従来の見解を詳細に検討した上で、無住作ではない可能性が高いことを指摘することができた。
