○研究目的近年、地球温暖化防止対策として、木質系バイオマスが注目を集め、燃料供給源としても森林が見直されてきているが、一般にはまだ普及が進んでいない。本研究は森林・林業体験教育を行い、森林や林業をとりまく状況を理解できるプログラムを構築することを目的とした。その中で森林から燃料(薪・炭)を採取し、それらを使って自然環境や森林・林業への理解を深めてもらうための問題点を検証する。また、フィールドとなる秩父演習林内で行っている炭焼きを秩父地域の歴史や文化の教育に組み入れることが出来るか検討する。○研究方法森林・林業体験教育は、ドラム缶ガマで炭焼きを行いながら、薪と炭だけを燃料に使って生活する1泊2日プログラムとした。ボランティア、一般社会人、大学生、大学院生を受講対象者として、2008年7月から11月までの間に4回のプログラムを行った。その中で過去の薪炭林・炭焼きの記録をもとに、古い炭焼窯跡などの見学や秩父地域の森林の歴史と先人の生活に関する話題提供を行った。さらに、体験教育での安全を確保するため、体験中に行う作業の危険性を検討し、対策を盛り込んだ安全作業マニュアルを作成した。○研究成果体験者には次のような感想を聞くことができた。「炭と薪の違いが解った。」「炭が木や竹から炭化する過程を直接体験することで色々な勉強になった。」「昔ながらの文化を伝承していく事は大切だと思う。」また、全員から、炭焼きをまた体験したいと評価が高く、炭焼きを通じて、自然環境や森林・林業への理解を深めることができた。安全の確保は、火や道具の取り扱い等が主な問題点であったが、安全作業マニュアルに従って作業を行うことで、無事に体験を行える事がわかった。以上の結果から、今回開発したプログラムは、秩父地域の歴史や文化の教育に組み入れることが可能であり、木質系バイオマスの理解に有効であると考える。
