本研究では、近代北海道におけるアイヌ教育史の中でも、1920年頃から高まりを見せた、尋常小学校卒業後の階梯へのアイヌの進学要求に焦点を合わせ、日本社会において中・高等教育制度の整備が進む中での、アイヌの教育に対する要求や関わり方を捉えることを目指した。具体的な方法・作業と成果は次のとおりである。(1)先ず北海道庁及び郡・市町村の統計書や公文書、新聞・雑誌記事、学校の沿革史等を調査し、高等小学校以上の階梯へのアイヌの進学者数などの基礎的事実を解明した。(2)これに当時の在学生や教職員その他関係者の回想録等の調査を重ね、アイヌの進学要求の様相(その際、実際には進学が叶わなかった者にも着目した)や進学後の学校生活の実態の把握を目指した。(3)北海道庁が「北海道旧土人奨学金給与規程」(1931年)により創設した奨学資金制度について、制定の背景や当局者による「意義」「恩〓」の喧伝等を押さえつつ、制度の運用の実態を、前期(1)(2)で明らかにしたアイヌの要求との関わりで検討した。(4)アイヌ自身が関わった進学支援事業について、キリスト教(聖公会)伝道者ジョン・バチェラーによる寄宿舎(バチラー学園)などに着目し、聖公会の文書等の関係資料を調査した。(5)以上を通して、当時のアイヌが、厳しい差別に晒される中で、次世代を担う者により高い階梯の学校教育を受けさせることを切実に希求していた様相と、しかし就職の問題などにおける袋小路的な陸路があった状態とを捉えることができた。(6)また、バチラー学園に関わったアイヌの有志による、中等学校設立を目指した活動に関する書簡などの注目すべき資料も新たに確認することができた。このような本研究の成果については、既にその一部を2012年9月の教育史学会大会発表等に反映させているが、最終的なとりまとめは、2013年10月の教育史学会大会にて発表する予定である。
