フェノールやユージノールなど歯科治療に用いる薬剤が、嗅覚から患者に不安や精神的苦痛を与える可能性が考えられる。そこで一般歯科医院を訪れる患者に、匂いに対するアンケート調査を行なったところ、80%以上の患者が歯科特有の匂いを感じると答えており、その匂いは、約50%が待合室で感じていた。またそれらの匂いによって嘔吐反射を誘発したり、歯痛を思い出させるなどの精神的苦痛を惹起する患者もいた。しかし矯正歯科ではこの様な匂いは感じないとする患者がほとんでであった。一般歯科と矯正歯科における句いの違いは主に根管治療をするか否かによるものと考えられた。そこで一般歯科医院における匂い強度を測定した。玄関の外を基準値として、玄関内、受付、待合室、治療室(入口、中央部、治療椅子)を測定場所にした。匂い強度は歯科医院によって様々であったが、全ての施設で治療椅子での匂い強度が最高値を示し、玄関内が低値を示していた。多くの患者が歯科特有の匂いを感じるとしていた待合室は比較的低値を示していた。全体的には治療椅子に近くなるほど匂い強度は増加傾向にあった。匂い強度が比較的低値を示した待合室で、約50%の患者が歯科特有の匂いを感じていたのは、これから受けようとする治療に対する恐怖や緊張が嗅覚を敏感にしたためではないかと考えられた。また、アンケートから患者は歯科治療をリラックスして行える匂いとして、無臭もしくはアロマテラピーの応用を期待していた。しかし匂いの好き嫌いは個人の経験や成育環境による影響が大きい。そのため誰もが快く感じる香りの摸索には更なる検索が必要であると考えられた。
