本年度は以下の点に関して研究を行い、次のような知見を得た。1) 昨年度と同様に西アフリカの大都市におけるインフォーマルセクターに関する先行研究の検討を行うと同時に、本年度は特に中小都市と周辺農村地域の動態的な関係に着目して先行研究の分析を行った。その結果、近年になって湾岸部の英語圏のみならず内陸部のフランス語圏においても中小都市の成長が顕著であり、サヘル以南の西アフリカ全域で「都市への移行」が進展していることが判明した。こうした都市は製造業などの生産基盤を欠いている場合も多く、経済的基盤が脆弱であるという欠点を持っているが、農村地域と国家レベルでの経済および政治との媒介すると同時に、流通や技術革新の拠点や農村からの季節的な人口移動の受け皿になる可能性を備えており、特にインフォーマルな経済活動がこうした中小都市を活性化するために重要であることが明らかとなった。2) 近代日本における中小都市と周辺農村の関係について福岡県を事例に分析を行った。その結果、工業化の違いなど都市の持つ「質」の相違が、周辺農村の分解や維持に対して異なった影響を及ぼすこと、そしてこの結果生じた都市-農村関係の変化が都市への食糧供給問題などを発生させていることが明らかとなった。この問題は現在アフリカで生じている都市向けの食糧供給に関連した農村経済の変容と同じ特徴を持っており、都市の経済活動の相違が周辺農村に対していかなる影響を生み出すかのより詳細な検討が、フィールド調査のみならず現実の政策決定においても重要であることが明らかになった。
