本研究の目的は、近代国家の領域拡大とその確定過程の中で新たな「開発フロンティア」となった地域における、新しい近代都市空間及び都市システムの成立とその成長過程に関する制度上及び社会的な諸条件について、実証及び比較の両面からアプローチすることを通じて、従来一般的には単なる「近代国土拓殖・開発史」の一局面としてエピソード的にしか取り扱われることのあまりなかった開発フロンティア地域の近代都市空間が、近代領域国家建設の現実の過程で果たしてきた独自の機能についての認識を新たなものとすることにあった。この研究助成によって実現された実証的な近代都市形成史資料の詳細な検討を通じ、とりわけインナーシティ等の具体的な都市の社会及び空間の実態に即して明らかなものとなってきたのは、近代国民国家の領域支配を巡る権力関係と領域的空間構成の現実との密接な関連の一端である。それは遠隔地支配における「都市空間統治の政治社会的二重性」をいう新たな概念で理解することが可能である。また、近代日本明治期以降の北海道を主な対象領域に、また19世紀後半以降の北米平原諸州地域を主要な準拠地域としてとりあげた比較地誌研究での成果作業の一端は、新興国民国家における「遠隔開発フロンティア地域」での市街地・初期的都市形成の実態について都市空間上相異なるレベルにおける政治行政的実践に関連した系統資料及び地誌史資料の整理を取りまとめた「フロンティア都市データベース」フォーマッティングにある。これには、初期的な都市諸学及び都市社会調査研究の発達プロセスの整理とともに、都市間ネットワークの発達過程、とりわけ物流および情報流のネットワークに関連する社会・空間的データの整理もあわせて含まれ、輸送関連諸施設の建設とそれに関連する都市政治行政過程のデータが比較的系統的に収集整理されはじめており、今後の同種研究の展開に対しても資するところがあると考えられる。
