本研究の目的は、大学生のパーソナル・ネットワーク(特に大学での友人関係)が大学のカリキュラムや個人の社会的特性の影響を受けつつ、どう形成されるのか、またそれが進路選択の過程とどう関わるのかを明らかにすることである。本研究の方法的な特色は(1)友人関係の形成変容過程、進路選択過程のパネル調査(2)「誰が友人か」の相互指名データによる友人関係のマクロ的な分析(3)進路選択と関連するネットワーク的要因とその他の要因との比較・関連付けを丹念に行うこと、である。上記の(1)(2)を実施するため、調査対象を特定大学の特定学科(専攻・コース)にしぼり、そこの学生達を全数調査する方法をとった。すなわち所属大学の佛教大学の社会学科3回生、関東地方の公立A大学、中部地方の国立B大学の社会学専攻(コース)2〜3回生であった。佛教大学では昨年度の予備的調査(11月)に基づいて、本年度4月と9月、A大学の2回生対象に5月初旬と7月末、B大学では昨年度1月(2回生)から継続して本年11月にパネル調査を行った。この後、データのコーディング、入力などを行い、年度末には、3大学における単純集計結果とごく基本的な分析結果をまとめた小冊子を作成した。そこでは、主に佛教大学のデータの分析から、次のようなことが報告された。(1)大学内の友人関係は3回生時にはほぼ安定化し、学外の旧友との関係の疎遠化が進行する。(2)部活動の友人数、学外の旧友の数、入学以前からの学内友人数等が、進路選択の方向性や進行度合と、各々独特な形で関連を持つ。(3)「性別」において同類結合が最も顕著に現れている。そして、この性別による障壁の高さと、集団内の友人関係の密度との関連性が検討された。
