1.中学卒業者のほとんどが高校に進学する日本と、3割程度の者が進学するギムナジウム上級段階では、教育課程における必修科目あるいは選択必修科目の意味が異なっている。高校の必修単位が「共通の」履修単位であり、1年次にその多くを履修するのに対し、ギムナジウムの必修単位は終わり2年の教育課程を構成する基本原理となっている。2.日本の高校では、国語、数学での必修単位は各4であり、外国語に至っては選択科目である。理科・社会科目においては、1つの科目を継続して学習する機会は制限されている。又、文化系コース等に見られる数学の履修の軽減は、文化系学部の入試科目から数学がはずされることにより、数学Iレベルにとどまることを意味する。理科系コースでは数学と理科の時間確保のために、地歴・公民が最低単位数にとどまる傾向が理解できる。また、国語・数学・外国語は、ドイツでは最終学年までの継続した履修が規定されているが、日本ではこれらの科目は、制度的強制がなく、必ずしも最終学年まで継続されるとは限らない。3.ドイツのギムナジウム上級段階は、1972年のボン協定により科目選択の可能性が高められたが、その後ドイツ語・外国語・数学を中心とした科目の継続性が高められた。第12・13学年ではアビトゥア試験科目の授業が継続して行われ、学習領域の偏りを防ぐために課題領域毎に選択すべきコースの最低時間数および履修科目の制限が規定されている。4.大学入学への条件が後期中等教育段階の教育課程を規定するという構図は、日独共通である。それが主として(減少し続ける)大学入学試験科目に規定されている日本と、ギムナジウム第12・13学年の成績を総合資格に組み入れるドイツとで、教育課程の編成方法が異なるのである。
