トバ・バタックの改葬墓に安置される被改葬者の世代深度は様々だが、本研究では、マルガ(marga)と称される父系氏族の始祖の改葬墓に考察の対象を限定した。本研究の目的は、改葬儀礼をめぐるトバ・バタック都市移住者の言説や改葬墓建立に関連した社会的・文化的事象を分析する作業を通じ、改葬墓建立を契機とした社会関係の創成/再編過程とその意義を、都市移住者の視点から検討することである。研究の二年度目に当たる今年度は、インドネシアでの現地調査を実施し、(1)都市移住者によって紹織されている氏族団体に対する郵送アンケートと、(2)マルガの始祖の改葬儀礼をめぐるケース・スタディのふたつを行った。氏族団体に対するアンケートでは、1996年出版の本に掲載されていた総数113の氏族団体事務局にアンケートを郵送し、38団体からの回答を得た(回答率33.6%)。38団体のうち、始祖の改葬墓を建立していたのは21団体(55.3%)であった。改葬墓のない17団体に対して、改葬墓がない理由を尋ねたところ、事業をまとめあげるリーダーの不在(64.7%)と系譜をめぐる見解の不一致(41.2%)が、その主たる理由として挙げられた(複数回答)。いくつかの改葬儀礼をめぐるケース・スタディからは、逆にこの2点をクリアすれば、たいていの場合、改葬墓建立と改葬儀礼が成功していることがうかがえた。1997年からの経済危機下にもかかわらず改葬墓建立を成功させたあるマルガの事例では、ジャカルタのビジネス界で成功を収めた若い世代のリーダーを中心に実行委員会が結成され、広範な合意が可能な範囲に限定して系譜に「正当性」を与え、マルガの始祖の埋葬地とされる場所を「故地」として<確定>することになった。社会経済的に成功した都市移住者が、改葬儀礼というチャンネルを通じて「故地」創出を主導することで、出身地に自己の名声を刻印するのである。
