The HPLC-MS/MS system extends the spectrum of trace compounds that can be detected complementary to the extraction methods established at the Institute of Soil Science and Soil Conservation (Pressurized liquid extraction, ultrasonic extraction, microwave-assisted extraction). In this context the MS/MS detection is essential for ensuring reliable quantification in complex matrices, as well as for targeted screenings for metabolites and “emerging pollutants”. This strength of the triple-quad MS technique is also important in the fields of chemical food analysis, e.g. for the quantification of residue concentrations, and of interest in the field of insect biotechnology for research addressing the production and application of natural chemical compounds.With the appointment of Prof. Jan Siemens as Professor of Soil Resources the Institute of Soil Science and Soil Conservation strengthens it research focus regarding the fate of pollutants (esp. pharmaceuticals) in soils. Therefore, the trace analysis of polar pollutants in soils and related environmental compartments is currently extended. Due to the large degree of capacity utilization of HPLC-MS/MS instruments at the iFZ and neighboring institutes, this application for a versatile device with a combination of MS/MS interface and photodiode array detector for the sensitive quantification of trace concentrations of polar organic compounds is supported insistently also by other working groups.
