文化研究を学際的、総合的に行う方法の開拓の一環として、あらゆる文化現象を横断的に研究しうる方法を、一定のアスペクトの設定とその共有によってなしうることを提起し、これを「文化位相学」と名づけた。何回かの実験によって、そのアスペクトの抽象度が高すぎると、議論が拡散する傾向を見るため、抽象度を中位度に設定した。1.具体的には「見立て」という文化位相を設定し、各分野、各時代の文化現象の分析を進めた。それによって、美術、文芸、遊芸、作庭、風俗習慣などを横断して、各時代を通じて見られる「日本の想像力」の特徴の抽出可能性を検討した。これについては報告を蓄積し、出版するために、編集作業を進めている。(1993年8月、五月書房より出版予定)2.また、「文化位相学」の応用として、より高位の位相設定を行うものとして、日本文化における「生命観念」の研究の可能性を探り、検討を重ねた結果、これを来年度からの共同研究会として発足させることを決めた。その作業のうち、1910年代の哲学、思想、文芸、自然科学などに見られる「生命主義」を全面的に検討する作業を、1992年『文芸』夏号、『現代誌手帳』9月号、1993年『早稲田文学』2月号と三つの雑誌で「対象生命主義」の特集を組むなど、かなりの程度具体化した。3.また、これらの経験の蓄積の中から、特定の「文化位相」にかわるものとして、ある一定の時代における文化全般に大して、多くの分野の研究者が一定のトゥールを共有することによって、総合的研究が可能となることが提起された。トゥール「総合雑誌」とすることで、文字どおりの学際的・総合的研究の可能性が探られ、「総合雑誌の総合的研究」を来年度から共同研究として発足させることが決まった。また大きなプロジェクトとして「近代日本文化のセルフイメージの動態研究」へと発展させる可能性が検討されている。
