本研究は,平田篤胤の宗教的思考を中心に考察し,次の3点を解明することができた。1.篤胤の思想を,本居宣長のそれと比較した従来の研究は,両者の断絶を強調する。しかし,霊魂観・死生観・宇宙論といった宗教的世界観においては意外に連続性・類似性が強いことを確認できた。今後は,両者に共通する宗教的世界観の意味するところを,日本人の伝統的宗教意識と関連させて,再検討する必要がある。2.篤胤の構想する幽冥界の存在形態およびそれと顕界(現世)との関係について,それが篤胤の思想の核心であるにもかかわらず十分解明されていないのが実情である。本研究ではこの点を深く追求し,篤胤は,幽冥界を,大国主命を頂点とし,人間の霊魂をも含む神々(霊魂の不滅性)がそれぞれに一定の役割を担いつつ,全体としてよく調和のとれた世界であると認識していたこと,しかも幽・顕両界は,補完の関係をなしており,両者の間には強固な一体観(幽顕一体観)が成立していたことを明らかにできた。篤胤の神観念といえば,従来,極端な非合理性と神秘性が強調されるきらいがあったが,この点も改められなければならない。3.死後人間の霊魂はどこへ行くのか。その行方を見定めて死後の「安心」を得たい(精神的救済)。これは,篤胤の最大の学問的課題であった。しかるに霊魂の行方と死後「安心」との関係についても,これまで納得のいく説明は行われなかった。本研究では,霊魂の不滅性と幽顕一体観という2つの概念をよりどころに両者の関係を改めて検討し,篤胤が死後「安心」を得たいとする志願をどのように解決していったのかを論証した。以上3点を明らかにできたことは,篤胤研究のみならず,国学思想を日本人の伝統的宗教意識との関連において見直す契機となるであろう。
