昨年度の助成では、ミクロネシアのフア イス島出土の土器にはヤップ島起源の土器とそれ以外の土器が混在していることが明らかになった。そこで今年度の助成ではアリゾナ大学のデイ ッキンソン博士に35片の土器の剥片資料を送付し、土器の粘土鉱物の鑑定をおこなってもらい、他のミクロネシア出土の土器および広くオセアニアの島々の土器に含まれる鉱物との比較を行った。その結果、35片中34片は、ヤップ島およびその南西にあるパラオ島産の土器であった。パラオの鉱物を含んだ土器片は、ヤップの土器とは異なった形質的特徴をもっているので、剥片資料にしなかった土器片からも抽出が可能である。鉱物分析と、形質分析の双方を用いて分類した結果、今から1900年前にフア イス島へ人間集団が拡散してきた時から、ヤップばかりでなくパラオからも土器が継続してフア イスに持ち込まれていたことが明らかになった。その割合は、ヤップ産が96%に対してパラオ産の土器が4%であった。全体に占めるパラオ産の土器片の量は少ないが、民族誌資料からは明らかにされていない先史フア イス島居住民のパラオとの交易が証明された。また、残り一片の土器片は、オセアニアの他の土器に含まれている鉱物成分とは合致しない。オセアニアの島以外から持ち込まれた可能性が考えられる。これらの結果は、デイ ッキンソンとの連名で、第47回日本人類学会、日本民族学会連合大会で発表した(印東道子、W.デイ ッキンソン「ミクロネシア・フア イル島出土土器の研究…交易相手の分析」)。

In the past year, the earth tools unearthed on the island were mixed with the earth tools originated from the island. This year's research and development team sent 35 pieces of soil tool stripping data to the university's research team, and the identification of soil tool clay materials. The result is 34 pieces in 35 pieces. It is possible to extract the characteristics of different shapes and qualities of soil tools, including soil tool pieces, soil tool pieces and soil tool pieces. Both physical and qualitative analyses were used to classify the results. Today, before 1900, the population of the island was divided into groups. 96% of the total output of agricultural machinery was produced by the Ministry of Agriculture. The amount of soil produced by the whole population is small, and the ethnographic data is proved by the transaction of the inhabitants of the island.
