この研究課題の目的は、先史モンゴロイド集団がオセアニアにどのように拡散し、適応しながら居住し続けたかを、考古学の発掘資料のデータを集積することによって明らかにすることにある。データベースはハードウェア:NEC-PC98XL^2ソフトウェア、TheCard3を使用した。抽出項目は、1)遺跡名2)遺跡立地3)年代4)出土人骨の有無5)出土遺物である。それぞれの島から報告されている最古の年代を地図しプロットし、土器などの物質文化の分布の変化などを分析した報告書は、本重点領域研究A01班として刊行される成果報告書中に発表される。オセアニアへは大きく2つの人類集団の拡散が行われ、後来の航海術に優れた新石器文化集団がオセアニアのほとんど全域に拡散した。物質文化はそれぞれが拡散した先の自然環境に合ったものに、技術や形が適応変化した。その過程で、土器のように、文化複合から脱落した文化要素もあった。データベースは、モンゴロイド集団が拡散した速度や方向、拡散した後の適応方法などをより顕著に表すと思われる文化要素を抽出して分析を加え、年内に別途、発表予定である。
