八丈方言は、東京都下では唯一無型アクセントの方言として知られていた。また、従来の研究では無型アクセントの話者は型知覚がないため、有型のアクセントを習得するのは極めて困難であるとされていた。本研究では、八丈島の坂上地区と坂下地区の生え抜きの小学生・中学生を対象に、読ませるアクセント調査と、型知覚の有無について調査を行った。その結果、八丈方言の若年層は東京アクセントを獲得しつつあることが明らかになった。無型アクセントから東京アクセントへの変化は、共通語化によるものと考えられる。何故ならば、まだ集計の途中であるが、小学生よりも中学生、中学生よりも高校生(平成4年度調査データによる)と、年齢が上がるにしたがって、東京アクセントの習得度が増すからである。ただし、読ませる調査では、単語レベルの読み上げ調査の結果よりも、文レベルの読み上げ調査の結果の方が、東京アクセント的でない話調が観察された。また、語によってはカネモチ(金持ち)[LHLL]のように、東京アクセントではない型が優勢であったりするが、この語も低年齢下するにつれて東京アクセントと同じカネモチ[LHHL]が増えてくる。八丈島の地域差としては、他所者の移住が比較的少ない坂上地区の方が東京アクセントの現われる率が少ない。高校生の方が東京アクセントが現われやすいのは、高校生にもなれば東京都内や、千葉、埼玉、神奈川へかなり自由に行くことができるため、東京アクセントに接する機会が多いためと解釈される。小学生ぐらいでは、まだ家庭内で比較的安定した八丈方言本来の無型アクセントに接することが多い。八丈島は、他の伊豆七島とは異なり、羽田への飛行機が一日5往復している。東京都内からの距離は遠いが、時間的には一時間足らずと近いことも共通語化のスピードを速めていると考えられる。
