本研究は、四つ仮名→三つ仮名→二つ仮名→一つ仮名の各方言の音声実態を明らかにし、日本語の子音体系の中でサ・ザ・タ・ダ行子音の実体とその変化の方向を明らかにしようとするものである。1992年8月に、東京学芸大で、高知県と鹿児島県の記者各一名の協力を得て「四つ仮名」音声のパラトグラムを収集した。東京大学医学部言語医学研究施設で、ファイバースコープにより高知県中村方言の前鼻音に伴なう軟口蓋の動きと、鹿児島県枕崎方言の入声音を構音するときの声門の動きを観察した。パラトグラムと、「音声録聞見」・INSAS/Mによるソナグラム,ファイバースコープによる口蓋帆と声門の動きをまとめて編集し、ビデオテープで成果を刊行した。本ビデオにより、「四つ仮名」の音声に関与する子音の特微を視覚的に捉えることができた。破擦音の場合、パラトグラムでは、口蓋の奥から両側面を這い上がるように硬口蓋に舌が接触してゆき、前歯の歯茎に達する。続いて内側が接し歯茎部に厚みのある接触面が観察される。一方、摩擦音の場合、歯茎の奥から接触が始まり歯茎後部に接触が接っていくが、口蓋の正中線上の接触はない。この点が破擦音とは異なる。ソナグラムに見る四つ仮名の対立は次の様である。破擦者では第2フォルマントの遷移に乱れがあり、閉鎖に伴なう無音区間が存在する。一方、摩擦音ではフォルトマントは連続的に遷移している。ファイバースコープによる前鼻音の観察は、次のようである。100分の1秒の単位で口蓋帆の動きをみると、約100分の4秒程度のす早さで軟口蓋が上下する。入声音では、声門閉鎖が観察され、パラトグラムの観察では舌が[t]の状態で硬口蓋に接していることが分る。これは、ダブルアーティキュレーションであることが観察できる。
