Epidemiological, clinical and experimental studies were carried out on neurological, psychological and behavioral disturbances induced by alcohol, to clarify relationships between reasons for drinking and problem drinking behavior, sobriety factors, neurobehavioral effects in alcoholics, etc. The following findings were obtained.1.Factors affecting sobriety were examined by questionnaires among patients with alcohol dependency. A group of patients who had continued sobriety reported that they considered family, job and AA to be important.2.Reasons for drinking in relation to problem drinking were studied in a group of high school students. Five factors of reasons for drinking, viz. escapism, sociability, tension-reduction, acting like a man and home/enjoyment, were identified. The first three were found to be related to problem drinking behavior.3.Neurophysiological examinations were conducted on patients with alcohol dependency.The patients showed slowing of nerve conduction, changes in distribution of nerve conduction velocities and abnormal findings of ECG R-R interval variability.Research findings have been published in journals and monograph and presented at scientific meetings.
