The purpose of this study was to develop the total self-etching primer to improve the bond strength of light-cured composite resin to polished enamel and dentin.First four acrylate monomers {2-acryloyloxyethyl hydrogen maleate (2AEM), 2-acryloyloxyethylhydrogen citraconate (2AEC), 2-acryloyloxyethyl hydrogen succinate (2AES), 2-acryloyloxyethyl hydrogen phtarate (2AEP) } were prepared for principal ingredient of binary total self-etching primer to evaluate the effect on bonding. For Scotchbond Multipurpose and PhotoBond, although the total self-etching primer contained 2AEM and 2AEC improved the bond strengths compared to those to polished enamel and dentine, the total self-etching primer containing 2AES and 2AEP did not improve the bond strength. However, the bond strengths to dentine rinsed with water for 10 sec. after applying the total self-etching primer were lower than those to treated dentine. Then the three acrylate monomers {2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), N-methylol methacrylamide (MEMA), N-methylol acrylamide (MEAA) } were used as additional principle ingredient of three component total self-etching primer containing 2AEM or 2AEC and water to improve the bond strength more than those obtained by using binary systems. For Scotchbond Multipurpose and PhotoBond, the three component total self-etching primers contained MEAA and binary systems remarkably improved the bond strength to dentine. However, the bond strength to enamel decreased by adding MEAA.For Scotchbond Multipurpose, the two total self-etching primer { (10wt% 2AEM,40wt% MEAA and 50wt% water), (25wt% 2AEM,25wt% MEAA and 50wt% water) } did not decreased efficacy of treatment even if applying time reduced. Although for Scotchbond Multipurpose, photoBond and LB Bond, the total self-etching primer (10wt% 2AEM,40wt% MEAA and 50wt% water) improved the bond strength, for MAC-BOND and FB BOND,efficacy of treatment was low.
