資源が激減したウナギの養殖用種苗を補うために, 天然生態情報を活用して人工種苗の生産技術の開発研究を行った。その結果, ホルモンを使わず, 水温の操作のみにより自然にウナギを成熟させる技術の確立に道が開けた。雌雄の親魚を水槽内で自然産卵させることにより, 奇形率が減り, 良質の卵を得ることができた。天然仔魚の栄養段階の解析から, マリンスノーを餌としていることがわかった。天然の生息環境を調べて, これを模した飼育装置を開発し, 生産コストを大幅に削減することができた。本研究によりウナギの大量種苗生産の実現に向けて大きく前進した。
