Sewage treatment mechanisms in terms of excess sludge production and microbial community structures of a UASB-DHS system was investigated. In addition, applicability of DHS reactor to a wastewater containing high strength of ammonium-nitrogen and a landfill leachate was also investigated. New media for DHS reactor was introduced in a reactor in India, and investigated its start-up characteristics under on-site practical conditions.
