当該年度は、『夜の寝覚』の男君と、女主人公の和歌に共通して見える「山の端」の語に着目し、「山の端」の語が物語展開に与えた効果を明らかにした。「山の端」の用例は、『夜の寝覚』の現存部では同じ場面で詠まれた男君と女主人公の和歌にそれぞれ1例ずつ見えるのみである。しかしながら、他の作品の用例や、『夜の寝覚』の欠巻部に関わる資料を参照することで、この場面にこの語が用いられた意味が浮かび上がり、『夜の寝覚』が和歌を作る際に他作品を摂取し、物語展開に必然性を持たせていく様相の一端を示すことができた。また、現存部と欠巻部の関連性についても、先行研究ではあまり注意されてこなかった方面から考察を加えることができたと考える。男君の和歌では、結句で「山の端の月」という特徴的な用いられ方をしている。これは、平安時代中期に活躍した歌人である和泉式部の和歌で、『拾遺和歌集』に載る「暗きより暗き道にぞ入りぬべき遥に照せ山のはの月」と同様の例である。和泉式部の和歌は、『夜の寝覚』の女主人公が出家を志す心境を語る場面にも踏まえられており、男君の和歌の「山の端」は、風景を単に詠み込んだものではなく、女主人公の出家が未遂に終わったことへの男君の感慨を示す表現であると読み解いた。女主人公の和歌では、初句から二句にかけて、「山の端の心」という表現が用いられる。これは、『源氏物語』の夕顔が詠んだ「山の端の心もしらでゆく月はうはのそらにて影や絶えなむ」と同様の例である。類例は他に見えず、夕顔の和歌を踏まえたうえで、男君を「山の端」のような存在として反発する女主人公の心情を示す表現であると捉えた。加えて、「夜寝覚抜書」に「あはれなどかげをならべて山のはにすみはつまじき契なりけん」とあり、「山の端」が中間欠巻部の記述を想起させる語として繰り返されていることにも言及した。
