项目摘要

本年度の研究活動期間は、帝国主義という時代の潮流もとでのハプスブルク帝国海軍の実相の解明に重点を置き、とりわけ、20世紀初頭の東アジアにおけるその活動を検証した。具体的には、我が国の歴史学における使用例が見当たらないハプスブルク帝国海軍文書を活用するため、オーストリア国立文書館を訪問し調査収集活動を行なった。また、同盟国であったドイツ帝国との関係を通してハプスブルク帝国のグローバル世界との結びつきを読み解くため、年度末にはベルリンにも赴き史資料調査を行なった。これらの収集史料を分析した結果、東アジアに常駐したハプスブルク帝国の軍艦の役割が多岐にわたり、なかでも、さまざまなアクターとの「交流」や「親善」が重要な機能であったこと、および、それらの活動を通じて、一見植民地主義とは無関係なこの「陸の帝国」が西洋のグローバルな植民地支配体制と深く交わっていた様子を明らかにした。このように「領土」ではなく海洋世界を動き回る「海軍」を軸に考察することで、植民地支配を行なわなかった国もグローバルな植民地主義体制と構造的に結びつき、その一部を構成していた歴史的事実を掘り起こすことができた。以上の半年間の研究から、従来の帝国主義史やグローバル史の研究領域から存在が消えていたハプスブルク帝国、および、これまでのハプスブルク帝国史研究で欠如していたこの帝国のグローバルな歴史像、その双方に新たな視角と学知をもたらすために、「植民地なき植民地主義」のアプローチが有する意義を改めて確認することができた。なお、以上の研究成果と新たな問題提起は、研究計画書に記載のとおり、2013年5月に京都大学で開催された日本西洋史学会第63回大会の部会別自由論題報告において発表し、さまざまな研究者から意見や批判を幅広く聞く機会を得た。
