Many studies reported the effects of stress factors on mental health and sleep among nursing professionals. However, there has been no study that has made international comparisons on this matter by using a questionnaire with a high degree of reliability and validity. In the present study, we make a Nurse Stress Scale(NSS) questionnaire and tested reliability and validity both in Japanese and Chinese hospital nurses.A cross-sectional questionnaire was given to Japanese and Chinese hospital nurses in order to compare the characteristics of work stress and mental health status between them. The responses of 1028 Japanese and 356 Chinese nurses were analyzed. The questionnaire included mental health status (CES-D), NSS (35 items) and coping profile.Nine factors were extracted through factor analysis of NSS closely agreed with the expected ll scales from the results of our previous studies. Mental health status of Japanese nurses was poorer than that of Chinese. Six factors of job stress i … More n Japanese nurses were higher : "high risk job", "job control", "personal relations", "support from colleagues", "conflict with doctors" and "patients' death". Among the coping profile, "avoidance and suppression" and "emotional expression", were higher, "active solution" and "seeking help" were lower in Japanese nurses. From the results of step-wise regression analysis, in which the dependent variable was CES-D scores, "workload" and "reward from work" in the job stress, and "avoidance and suppression", "emotional expression", "changing mood" in the coping profile were significantly related to CES-D scores in both countries. In addition, "problem in personal relationships" and "changing a point of view" were also associated with CES-D in Japanese, while "support from colleagues" was in Chinese. These results indicated that poorer mental health status in Japanese nurses was partly derived from their higher work stress status, especially in "problem in personal relationships", and emotion-oriented coping profile.
