Thoughts in Orthographical Problems : Orthography Discussions in the History of German Language from 1700 to 1850.

By researching the history of German orthography, we found that we should engage in the orthographical principles of the grammarians, Johann Christoph Gottsched (1700-1766) and Johann Christoph Adelung (1732-1806). The grammar book 'Kern der deutschen Sprachkunst" (1773) of Gottsched had three main principles : "pronunciation" of court people, "usage" of best authors and "stem" of words. In the case of the co-occurrence of these principles, the grammarian had to make ad hoc decisions. Adelung names these principles "pronunciation", "usage" and "form" (Abstammung). By our corpus analysis, we can say that concerning to the practice of spelling of separable verbs in that time, the principles of pronunciation and form are less important than that of usage.
