人が身体的に表現された情緒を情報としてどのように使えるようになるのかという問題は、感性の一つの側面としての情緒とそのコミュニケーションに対して示唆を与えうる。本研究では、言語や高度な認知システムを持たない乳児期から、言語が主たるコミュニケーション・モードのなる幼児初期までの母子の実験場面のやり取りを追跡して、上記の問題を検討する。具体的には、次のような実験事態である。「他者への問い合わせ」(social referencing)と呼ばれるものである。一室(家庭あるいはプレイルーム)に母子を置き、子どもに正負の意味があいまいで戸惑う物(ロボットの玩具)を見せる。乳児が母親の顔を見たところで、母親があらかじめ指示された正(笑顔)あるいは負(恐れなど)の表情を示す。もし乳児が母親の表情を何らかの情報として利用しているならば、正負の表情の応じて刺激物に対して接近あるいは回避の行動を起こすはずである。我々は、通常の手続きと異なり、乳児が母親の顔を見て初めて、母親が表情を示すようにした。それが乳児の能動的な環境探索を様子をよく示すと考えたからである。本年は、第1に、12カ月児について、その能動的な環境探索の中で表情情報を利用していることを示した。第2に、それと比較できる形で、6カ月児の行動を検討した。12カ月児の母子62組についてその家庭あるいは大学のプレイルームで上記の実験を行った。刺験への接触度、刺激外の玩具への接触度乳児の感情状態、母親の顔を見るまでの反応潜時などの指標の検討から次のような結論を導いた。あいまいな刺激に出会った乳児は、母親の表情を情報として利用し、刺激に対する自分の行動を調整する。乳児は、母親の表情を積極的に環境探索のために求める。この実験と比較するために、6カ月児(現在のところ30組程)の母子を同様の事態で検討した。この年齢では、母親の表情を情報として利用はしないと思われる。
