文化的スクリプトの代表として「食事」を選び、その手順と概念の発達的変化を検討した。質問紙調査では、小・中・大学生に対して、「食事らしい食事」の情景とその理由を求めた。その結果、生理的意味(栄養摂取・健康維持)重視から、社会的意味(交流を深める)重視へという発達的変化が認められた。この結果は、文章の記憶実験での支持された。すなわち、夕食場面を描いた短い物語の再認をとったところ、年齢が上がるにつれて、再認され易い文が、生理的内容のものから社会的内容のものへと変化することが示された。後半の3つの実験は、知識構造の解明を目的とした。分類実験では、いくつかの絵の中から‘意味が同じもの'を基準にカテゴリ-を構成させ、そこから知識の有無をみた。その結果、発達に伴って知識量が増加していくこと、小学校2年生でも生理的意味に関する知識と社会的意味に関する知識を同程度に持っていることが示された。ここから、概念の変化は知識の有無によってではなく、その重みづけの変化によることが示唆された。説明実験では、小・大学生に、食事の手順や生理的・社会的事象を説明させた。その結果、小学校2年生は、手順と生理的意味を密接に関連づけて捉えていること、年齢が上がるにつれて、社会的意味が生理的意味によって根拠づけられていくことが示された。食事の判断実験では、食事の知識として最も基本的なものであるスクリプトとの関連のもとに、生理的・社会的意味に関する知識をとらえなおした。小・大学生に対して、手順は整っていないが、生理的あるいは社会的意味がポジティブに付与されている場面と、手順は整っているが、生理的あるいは社会的意味がネガティブに付与されている場面を示し、それが食事であるか否かを判断させた。その結果、年齢が上がるとともに、社会的意味がポジティブに付与されていれば、たとえ手順が整っていなくてもそれを食事であると判断するようになった。
