本年度は主として、清朝の海関に焦点を合わせて、琉球をも含む中国の対外関係を全体として考察する作業を進めた。これまで琉球の歴史的位置の考察には、中国・琉球間の朝貢関係が主要な対象とされてきた。ところがその朝貢の基底を支えた両者の交易関係については、実証的な研究はなお不十分であり、これを推し進めるには、まず中国沿岸諸港での清朝の貿易管理体制がどのようなものであったか全体的な見通しが要求される。そこで琉球というテーマからいささか離れたが、まず比較的史料や研究も豊富な広東の体制について研究を行ない、その成果の一端を公表した。それによって中国の対外関係においては、広東に典型的にみられるように、海関に属する中国側仲買商人の役割がきわめて大きく、彼らの存在が交易を具体的に秩序づけたものであるとの結論を得た。同時に琉球に即しての作業をも行なってきた。これは主として歴史情報とすべき資料の収集にあるが、上のような成果をふまえ、他方で本重点領域研究の他の計画研究班との交流、議論を通じて資料収集の基準を定めつつある。資料の主要なものは当然中国、琉球双方のものであるが、これらの漢文史料は性格上たとえば貿易での手続、取引のあり方などまで明示してくれるものではない。別系統の視点を異とする史料をも多く集める必要がある。そこで中国貿易で最も利害関係の深かったイギリスの諸資料の収集につとめている。これらの一部は本重点領域研究に参加する研究者に提供し、その史料的価値などについて議論を深めつつある。
