本年度の研究は、琉球の朝貢貿易を明清時代の中国の側から位置づけるのを主要な目的とするものであった。これまで中国各港における具体的な貿易の実態から、中国の沿海交易の全体像、中国の貿易体制を考えなおし、再構築する作業は国内外を通じてほとんどなされてこなかった。こうした現状に鑑みて、まず史料も研究も比較的豊富な清末の広東について研究に着手し、その結果、貿易港の仲買商人(牙行、洋行)が清代中国の朝貢関係における民間交易を秩序づけたものであり、その役割がきわめて重要だと考えるに至った。この知見を手がかりとして、本研究においては、重点領域研究「沖縄の歴史情報研究」の主たる研究テーマである琉球を中心に、中国の対外関係のあり方を全体的に描きだそうとしたものであり、琉球が朝貢その他で船を派遣し、貿易を行なった清代の福州を中心として、そこに見られる中国側の貿易政策、貿易機構、市場組織を明らかにできた。すなわち、明清交替にともなう中国側の貿易政策の転換は海関という官庁の設置に具体的に表現されたこと、福州で琉球の朝貢をうけつけた球商は、取引の規模や内容こそ異なっても、広東の洋行とほぼ同じ性質のものであったこと、そうした商人の存在の背後にある中国の各港の市場組織は、外からの需要に敏感に反応するものであったことを論じた。以上の点において福州の琉球貿易は、アヘン戦争前後を通じて行なわれた、広東や上海におけるイギリスの貿易と軌を一にするものであったわけで、従来の研究がそれぞれを個別に理解したがゆえに見過ごしてきた結論が得られたのである。しかし細部に至っては、なお不明な点が残されており、本研究の成果では、大掴みな素描に終始せざるをえなかった。したがって本研究がめざす最終的な目的が十分に達成できたわけではない。今後はこの成果の上に立ち、所期の目的を達成すべく、さらに問題を深め、研究を発展させることとしたい。
