The research project "Flexible Organ Plan in Higher Plants", abbreviated as "Plant Organ Plan" and supported by Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Priority Areas, was conducted for 4 years from 1994 to 1997 by 42 scientists in various fields. In this project, research attention was focused on identification and characterization of various regulatory components that regulate the development of metabolic activities in plant organs and the morphogenesis of plant organs. Towards this goal, research proposals employing molecular genetics of model plants such as Arabidopsis thaliana and rice were especially encouraged. Large numbers of new regulatory genes, those for transciption factors and components of signal transduction pathways were isolated and their functions were examined in transgenic plants. Part of research achievements were made public through several symposiums organized by the project and in an open symposium [University and Science] organized by the Ministry of Education, Science, Sorts and Culture. This year, core members of the project examined and summarized various research results obtained in "Plant Organ Plan" in order to further promote science in this field. The summary, which includes a list of publications by the project and copies of major publications is distributed to a large number of scientists in the related fields.
