The purpose of this research is to demonstrate several aspects of the change in the metropolitan suburban region and to have some perspectives on the future of the region. The suburban region is in a significant turning point because the diversification of demographic composition and the lifestyle shift both induced by the generation transition from the "first suburban generation" to the "second" has converted homogeneous characteristics of the region. Therefore, we analyzed statistics on the family status, the housing types and the working conditions of Tokyo Metropolitan Area and showed several maps of the spatial structure of the area in chronological order. Furthermore, we conducted a questionnaire survey and an interview investigation at a typical suburban residential section and grasped the problem concerning residential sustainability of the section.A large amount of young population flowed into metropolises from everywhere in the country after World War II.
