This study examined how Japanese middle school students' academic ability is cultivated in their schools. The research revealed next three points.Firstly, socioeconomic status (SES) influenced middle school students' academic achievement. Secondly, the degree of the influence was very small in a school, but it was not in the others. Finally, the effective school, which reduced the effect of SES on students' achievement, aroused the students' interest in studying by means of not only academic subject lessons but also integrated lessons.
