大角翠(研究代表者)は平成14年8月、9月にニューカレドニア本島で言語調査を行った。8月8日から26日まで及び9月2日から13日までは、ブラーユ近郊のワウェ部落に滞在しネク語の調査を行った。昨年の滞在先の家族や部族の首長などの協力で、限られた時間であったが多くの資料が得られた。部落のもろもろの習慣や、やむ芋の焼畑農耕、料理などの生活、文化的知識も得ることができた。ヌメアでは、海外共同研究者や協力者の協力も得て、ニューカレドニア地域全般の言語資料の調査、収集を行い、また、チバウ・カナク文化センター・ディレクターのE・カザレル氏、ニューカレドニア大学のF・アングルヴィエル教授やルレカリ教授と意見交換を行った。アンジュー語などの研究で知られる言語学者のジャクリーヌ・ド・ラ・フォンティネル教授とも数回にわたり、現地調査での問題点や私のネク語文法に関する仮説などについて討論することができた。また、A・オレロさんの協力でティンリン語の辞書項目のチェックを行った。ネク語は話者数が221人(1996年統計)と推定されている深刻な消滅の危機に瀕している言語であり、これまで辞書や文法は記述されていない。まだ完全に話せる人々が存在するうちにできるかぎりの調査と記録の必要が迫られている。平成13、14年に大角がワウェで収集したネク語の基礎語彙とテキストは、分析,編集したのち、『環南太平洋の言語 第2号』及び『環南太平洋の言語 第3号 (ネク語とティンリン語の分離可能、不可能所有構造について)』の中で発表した。ティンリン語とネク語は隣接した地域で話されているにも拘わらず、語彙、音韻、文法面のすべてにわたり非常に異なっており、比較言語学の見地からも興味深いものである。現在ネク語については語彙集の制作、テキストの文字化、文法分析を続けており、ティンリン語については辞書作成の為のコンピューター入力がひととおりかたちをみてきたところだ。今後、さらに校正、加筆、翻訳の作業が必要である。ヴァヌアツの調査に関しては、内藤真帆(研究協力者、京都大学大学院)が6月〜9月と11月にツツバ島語のフィールドワークを行った。また、南太平洋大学、ヴァヌアツ文化センターで、ヴァヌアツ言語に関する情報を収集した。佐藤寛子(研究協力者、東京女子大学大学院)は4月、5月の期間、パプア・ニューギニアに滞在、ニューブリテン島のカポ島およびキンベ、コーベ地区でコーベ語のフィールド調査を行った。カポ島には大角も同行した。ポートモレスビーでは、パプア・ニューギニア大学や公文書館で、ニューブリテン島関係の情報を収集した。大角、内藤、佐藤は、平成14年11月に行われた国際学術講演会「消滅に瀕した言語」に出席、大角はティンリン語、ネク語の所有構造について研究発表を行った。
