先天性代謝病の原因は、遺伝生化学、分子生物学的な異常に基づくものであり、その研究を推進するためにはこの方面の分野を専門とする基礎医学研究者の協力と援助が必要である。一方、先天性代謝病に基づく臨床的な異常は、それが単一の遺伝子の異常であっても、各々の疾患によって、肝臓、腎臓、内分泌系、神経系、血液系などに障害を生じ、その臨床像は誠に多種多彩で、夫々を専門とする小児科学、並びに内科学研究者が多角的、綜合的に研究することが必要である。この観点から大きなプロジェクトチームが組まれて先天性代謝病の病因解析と治療に関する研究が進められてきた。このように多方面の研究者が綜合的に研究するには、幅広い各研究班の連けいと情報の交換が必要であり、総括班が中心になってその情報交換と研究協力を促進してきた。そして3年間の研究において、国際的にも高く評価される多数の研究成果が報告されてきた。このような研究成果のうちで特に独創的な業績をあげた研究テーマを中心としたシンポジウムを企画し、これを9月に東京で2日間にわたって開催した。このシンポジウム「International Seminor on the molecular basis of inherited metabolic diseases」でとりあげられた課題は遺伝性血液疾患、先天性膜輸送障害、先天性複合糖質代謝異常、リソゾーム酵素異常、コラーゲン代謝異常の病因解析、殊にその遺伝子解析、疾患動物モデル、および酵素補充療法であり、これには東京で同じ時期に開催中の国際脂質学会に出席するために来日していた欧米の先天代謝異常の優れた研究者6名も参加した。更に、3年間の研究成果のうちで最も進歩の著しかった研究について各班員より英文の報告書を集め、これを編集して英文の業績集として印刷し、これを全国の大学医学部および医学研究所に送付し、その成果を伝え、この領域の研究の進歩を促した。
