The history of altases in Europe traces back to Geographia of Ptolemy in Roman times and it revives in the Renaissance. But the first modern atlas is originated from A.Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum published in 1570.This research project persuits the following points ;1)The survey of the several editions of Geographia, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum and Mercator's Atlas.2)The analysis of the idea of atlases expressed in the compiler's forewords and the texts attached to the maps.3)The comparison between Theatrum Orbis Terrarum and other modern atlases.The results of research are as follows ;1)The modern altases not only delineate the whole world, but also express the world view, religious standpoints and the cosmology of their compilers.2)The level of ideas for atlases range from the commercial concern of Ortelius to the scientific one of Mercator.
