The dendritic reticulum cells (DRCs) in the lymph nodes and extra-nodal lymph follicles of human, mouse and rat were observed in light and electron microscopy under the physiological, stimulated and immunized conditions as well as ontogenesis.We are presenting the results as follows:(1) The DRCs were almost confined to the germinal center. They were divided into the DRCs without labyrinth structure and with labyrinth structure. The former was widely distributed in whole germinal center. The latter was scatteredly distributed in the upper portion of the light zone.(2) The DRCs with labyrinth structures had several complicated cytoplasmic extensions. In cross sections, the labyrinth structures bore a resemblance to those of Brussels sprout. The cytoplasmic processes of germinal center cells showed no concern with the labyrinth structures.(3) The cytoplasmic plasmalemma of DRCs showed a positivity for Ia-like antigen. Between the DRCs and lymphoid cells, desmosome and/or desmosomal junctions were frequently observed.(4) The fibroblastic reticulum cells, forming the stroma of lymph nodes, were transformed into the typical DRCs with labyrinth structures in the cap area.(5) In the well-developed secondary follicles, the immune complex trapping cells, out of DRCs, were mainly localized in the cap area.(6) The early complement components in classical pathway and their complement receptors were detected on the cell surface of DRCs in the germinal centers of lymph nodes and extranodal lymph follicles.
