Influence of repeated administration of proline analogue to weanling rats

Together with observations by Emery (1970) and our previous experiments (Kida et al 1980, 1981), collagen and elastin play a key role in postnatal alveolar formation in this experimental protocol, weanling rats were treated with proline analogues which including cis-4-hydroxyproline and semicarbazide, respectively, and their morphology and pressure-curve measurements were compared with these of control animals. The lungs of cis-4-hydroxyproline treated animals did not reveal any remarkable changes in the lung function and morphology, respectively, except for the larger body weight than the control animals. Semicarbazide treated rats showed marked deformity of chest wall and showed surpression of normal alveolar formation. From these observation, chest wall movements was considered an additional role in the postnatal alveolar growth, Therefore, a rat model of chest wall restriction was made and their excised lungs was studied in term of lung function and morphology. These rats lung showed remarkable decreased of number of alveoli in the lung but each alveolar sizxe did not change in significant range.
