Actual problems on care and use of laboratory animals in U.S.A. and Canada

To investigate the present situation of the guidelines on animal experimentation in U.S.A. and Canada, and to collect informations on present and future aspects of replacement of laboratory animals in the above 2 countries for the purpose of raising the Japanese scientific and ethical standards of animal experimentation to the international level, we visited to Ottawa University, Duke University, NIH, Canadian Council for Animal Care and other 12 organizations, and obtained 73 references, e.g., guidelines and samples of protocal, vide tapes recoded over 20 hours and 40 rolls of color film. Detailed reports on the present investigation will be published on "Anitex", a Japanese journal for laboratory animal science and technology, within 6 months.
