「ウィリアム・ブレイク(William Blake,1757-1827)と自然宗教(Natural Religion)」という研究テーマは、これまでのブレイク学においては、しばしば言及されながらも、未だ十分には論じられたことはなかった。ハワード(John Howard)の『ブレイクの「ミルトン」』(Blake's Milton,1976)は、自然宗教の知的背景を主にトマス・ベイン(Thomas Paine)らに求め、ハーツィング (Thomas W.Herzing)の論文(Blake Studies,1973)はジョン・ロック(John Locke) とこのテーマの関係を扱っている。しかしながら、これらは共に 『ミルトン』 という作品を対象にしており、その議論も十分とは言えない。ブレイクにおける自然宗教のイメージは複雑・多様なものであるが、本研究では、先ず、18世紀英国における自然宗教の歴史的背景を明らかにした。その際、(1)ニュートン(Sir Isaac Newton)科学・ニュートン的自然哲学及びこれの注釈者(コメンティター)ともいうべき人たちによってなされた「ボイル講義」(Boyle lectures;特にBentleyやClarke等によるもの。A Defense of Natural and Revealed Religion,1739参照)が18世紀自然宗教の性格・方向の形成に果たした役割を重視した。更に、(2)18世紀に輩出した思弁的神話(Speculative Mythology)作家たちを特に取り上げ、英国古代史、ドルイド教育、英国・イスラエル運動、フリーメイソン、建築等と、自然宗教との関連を明らかにした。即ち、スピード(John Speed)、ステュークリ(William Stukeley)、ブラザーズ(Robert Brothers)、ウッド(John Wood)等の著作(マイクロフィルム)を上に述べた視点から解読し、彼らがブレイクに及ぼした影響を分析した。上で得た知見をもとに、未だ解明され尽くしたとは言い難い、ブレイク最後の大作、預言書『イエルサレム』(Jerusalem)の分析を試みた。
