The mean survival time (MST) of Fujimoto ascites tumor-bearing mice was significantly prolonged by subcutaneous (sc) injection of 100 mg/kg recombinant human superoxide dismutase (rSOD) or 15 mg/kg 2-0-octadecylascorbic acid (CV-3611) 3 times, compared to untreated mice (rSOD : 11.94 <plus-minus> 0.34 vs. 9.88 <plus-minus> 0.33 days, p<0.001 ; CV-3611 : 13.58 <plus-minus> 1.82 vs. 9.78 <plus-minus> 0.19 days, p< 0.05). The MST was 22.00 <plus-minus> 1.44 days in mice intraperitoneally (ip) given 75 mg/kg bleomycin (BLM) 3 times. It decreased to 11.36 <plus-minus> 0.80 days in mice given 120 mg/kg BLM ip 3times but it was significantly (p < 0.05) higher (16.79 <plus-minus> 2.47 days) in those given both 120 mg/kg BLM ip and mg/kg rSOD sc 3 times or (16.86 <plus-minus> 2.70 days) both 120 mg/kg BLM ip and 15 mg/kg CV-3611 sc. Pneumomia, degenerated liver, and atrophic salivary glands were seen in mice given BLM, but these pathological change were milder in mice given BLM combined withPathological findings indicating cardiotoxicity, i. e. contraction band necrosis, stretching, eosinohpilic degeneration of cardiac muscles and endocarditis, were seen in mice given 3 mg/kg adriamycin ip 6 times, these pathological changes were milder in mice given 3 mg/kg adriamycin ip combined with 30 mg/kg rSOD sc 6 times or 5 mg/kg CV-3611 sc.
