本研究の目的は、1初等・中等教育における数学教育の用語を可能な限り収集し、2その中から特に教育関係、すなわち数学教育に固有なキーワードを選択して、それを階層順序に整理することにあった。まず、シソーラスやその作成に関する文献、すでに開発されているシソーラスなどを参考にして、シソーラスについての理解を深めた。1の目的に対しては、研究代表者、分担者、協力者による会合を開き、用語収集のための文献について検討し、これまでこの研究メンバーが携わってきた日数教掲載記事要録、数学教育に関する用語集・辞書・事典、数学教育に関する図書で索引がついているもの、数学教育に関する雑誌で索引やキーワードがついているもの等からできるだけ多くの用語を収集することにした。この結果をもとにして、メンバーが分担して文献から用語の収集を行なった。2の目的に対しては、収集した用語を大項目に分類することによって、分類先のない用語、複数の項目に分類できる用語、キーワードとしては不適当と考えられる用語等を明らかにして、それらの問題点を解決できるよう項目名を改訂していくと共に、大項目から徐々に樹形図の枝をのばしていき、シソーラスを造りあげていくという方法を用いてシソーラス案を作成した。また収集した用語すべてをこのシソーラスに従って分類した結果を、用語の五十音順と分類番号順に並べた用語一覧表を作成した。なお、本研究の内容をまとめた報告書を作成した。
