本研究の目的は、昭和30年以降わが国農家世帯について確認されている経験的事実、(1)農家戸数の減少、(2)農地所有者世帯の増加、(3)農家世帯人員の減少に着目し、歴史人口学・家族社会学・家族経済学の見地から、家族類型構成比変化、家族機能変化、家族規模変化の相互関連を各種公刊資料、「農家台帳」、アンケ-ト調査等を利用して数量的に解明することである。本研究によって得られた新たな知見等の成果は次の通りである。1.昭和30〜60年にわが国の世帯規模は1.62人縮小したが,縮小の要因分析によれば、農家・非農家間の構成比変化による要因が約4分の1、農家・非農家の世帯規模縮小による要因が約4分の3であった。2.非農家世帯を比較すると、農家世帯は世帯規模の大きいその他親族世帯の構成比が高く、世帯規模の小さい核家族世帯・単独世帯の構成比が低い。このことは、非農家世帯との比較において、農家世帯における家族機能の外部化が遅れていることを意味するが、これはこの世帯における農業生産機能の維持によるものである。3.家族類型別の世帯規模は、農家世帯と非農家世帯で大きな差はない。核家族世帯ではほぼ一致し、またその他親族帯(概念としては直系家族世帯に対応)ではその差が縮小している。このことは、農家・非農家を問わず、世帯規模は家族類型によってほぼ一義的に定まることを表している。4.人口集中地区・非人口集中地区間の農家世帯の世帯規模縮小には違いが見られた。人口集中地区では家族類型構成比変化による要因が観察されたのに対し、非人口集中地区ではその要因が観察されなかった。5.この他、「農家台帳」による数量分析、農家地帯別アンケ-ト調査も行ったが、いずれにおいても経営規模の大きい農家世帯ほど、また農村地帯に居住する農家世帯ほど、家族類型変化は小さいことが確認された。
