本研究の目的は古チベット語文献の分析を通して8-10世紀の古チベット語の口語形式とそれが使用された社会言語学状況を解明することである。とくに多言語・多民族社会で書かれたテキストから言語形式を再構成する際、地域差・時代差にくわえ、書き手の母語の干渉をはじめとする社会言語学的ファクターを重視するのが特徴である。平成4年度は、3年度にひきつづき契約分書と手書文書の解読・データベース化と、言語データの分析をおこなった。その結果、つぎの諸点が判明した。1.チベット文書にあらわれる人名の分析の結果、漢人・ソグド人・コータン人・ウイグル人・アシャ人など、各人の民族を判定する基準が設定できた。漢人・コータン人・ウイグル人はチベット文書の書き手でもある。2.河西ではチベット語と漢語に二言語併用、コータンではコータン語にかぶさって790年以前は漢語が、以降はチベット語が併用された状況が明らかになった。3.敦煌におけるチベット文書のおもな書き手であった漢人の写経生が、tshanという単位で構成されていた状況が判明した。4.書き手の母語の干渉は音韶面でおおく確認された。語法・統語論のレベルでは母語の干渉はすくない。5.大英図書館での調査で、未公刊の文書約200点を見いだし、現在解読・データベース化をすすめている。コータン出土文書についてはBSOASに論文を掲載。敦煌・トルキスタンにおける多言語使用状況は、契約文書についての英文モノグラフの一章で論述する予定。古チベットの口語形式の復元は部分的にすすめているが、データベースの完成と方言形式との比較をもとに最終的な形を提出したい。
